时尚口语: What’s the Rush?
Sometimes I think we need to get off this wild ride----the ride we call life-----as we know it. As the song goes, “slow down, you’re moving too fast, you got to make the good times last.” Why have we become addicted to fast, and still it’s not good enough? Computers and gadgets need to be faster and faster. Fast food can’t get fast enough. I recently went to a wedding, and it was over so quickly. We don’t want to wait for other cars; we want the ultimate fast lane, with the ultimate speed. Heck, if we could afford it. I’m sure we would take rockets instead of planes.
But even that’s not fast enough. Until the science fictions dream of moving one place to another in a blink of an eye becomes reality, we’ll be unhappy. Perhaps speed is not the answer to happiness all the time. Once in a while, slowing down is the answer. At least enjoy the ride we call life. It’s not just about getting to the end----the end will come, but enjoying the trip. That’s what I need to do more of. What about you? Even if you win the rat race, you are still a rat!
Talk about it. Are you impatient? How often do you eat fast food? Are you happy with the speed of your computer or your internet connection? Do you wish could slow your life down a little? What do you think people who are always in a hurry? Do you take time out during the day and try to slow things down? What can people do to slowing their life down and not be in such a hurry? Do you know what the expression “take time to smell the roses” means? Dose this expression apply to your life? Are you happy with the current pace of your life?
时尚口语:Sonmat -- Making Something Extra-special
I made some kimchi recently. Okay... my mother-in-law and wife made kimchi, and I help a little.
But as I was watching the kimchi-making process, I got to thinking about "Sonmat". "Sonmat" is one of those Kerean words that is impossible to translate into English.
Sonmat is the hidden ingredient, the symbolic thing you do the effort and the heart behind what you do. The ingredients are crucial but that unseen element adds to the end product (final result). Literally translated, "sonmat" means "hand-flavor", but it's NOT something that can be measured scientifically. Some food tastes better because of the love and that went into the preparing... that went into the cooking. It's also the experience that the cook has.
Well, as I was thinking this special ingredient that often goes into cooking, I thought about how it could be applied to pretty much anything you do...(It could be used in may different solutions)
The cleaning.
The work you do.
The studying.
The writing.
The ... ANYTHING.
Why should that magical ingredient be limited to just food? Why not all things that we do?
Talk about it
1. What does "sonmat" mean to you?
2. Can you compare your mother cooking with that of a restaurant?
3. Why do you think they taste different?
4. How do you feel after you make a homemade meal?
5. Do you feel good when people compliment you on your cooking?
6. Do you get a sense of satisfaction in doing something for yourself?
7. How could you apply "sonmat" to things not related to cooking? Use your imagination.
8. Are we in danger of losing "sonmat" due to our busy lifestyles?
9. What can we do to ensure that we include "sonma" in our lives?
10. How important is "sonmat" to you?
11. The amount of effort involved is what gives meaning to a gift? How important is this effort to you?
时尚口语: Focus--trying to concentrate
A famous athlete once said: It is not necessarily the amount of time you spent of practice that accounts, it's what you put into the practice. So we can spend our time, studying, or practicing, or doing whatever, but if we aren't able to focus, the quality isn't there. And the time can easily get wasted. So, assuming that you are awake, but you just don't seem to be able to focus well, what do you do to shift gears? What do you do to make a difference? Sure, just relaxing and goofing around may be a good idea once in a while, like taking a break. But what helps us to focus? When you really need to get some work done, and you need to be able to concentrate, what do you do? Do you have kids, or teach kids? If you do, you know that they have plenty of energy and a short attention span. Combining these two things and focusing is a big, big challenge. So, how do you help the kids? Carry a stick? Bribe them with candy? Do you have any good strategies you can share? When it comes to the focusing for the self, or trying to help others focus, it's a challenge.
Talk about it:
Do you spend your time wisely? What practice or study methods do you use? Do you lose your concentration easily? Or, can you stay focused? How often do you take breaks? What do you do when you breaks? After you take a break, do you have a difficult time going back to work? How do you motivate yourself to work, study, or practice harder? Is there a certain time of day when you find easiest to focus? What kind of environment helps you to concentrate the most? Do you find that you can concentrate better in a quiet setting? What type of noises or sounds do you find extracting?

时尚口语: Routines
I get up everyday at 5:30.
I shave and wash up.
I get a quick-buy to eat.
I’m on the road by 6:30.
I get to the studio and have a cup of coffee.
And on and on.
We all have routine that we go through everyday.
The thing we do, almost as a rule.
Routines can be wonderful, like certain exercise routine that we follow, it keeps us on track to being fit.
I call my parents and brother every Friday, it’s part of my weekly routine.
But routines can also makes a day kind of blind, or lacking flavor, a bit too normal.
We go through a day, and it is not so special.
It’s easy for the day to fly by if we just take our routines.
If you get a chance, do something outside your daily routine.
Choose a different way to walk to the bus stop.
Find a new restaurant to eat lunch.
Call your loved one at the time you normally wouldn’t.
These are big changes in your routines.
With those little chances, you can spice up the life in a little ways.
Talking about it:
Describe your daily routine? Does your daily routine ever vary? How? What could you do to change your routine? Do you enjoy changes? What kind of changes do you enjoy? What are the advantages of having a routine? What are the disadvantages of having a routine? Some people say “variety is the spice of life”. What does this mean to you?
