I am happy to join with you today in what will go down传下去被承受 in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. Five score years ago一百年前, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree重要的发令 came as a great beacon light 航标灯of hope to millions of Negro slaves, who had been seared 凋枯萎in the flames of withering injustice挖苦性的不公平. It came as a joyous 〔joy〕daybreak 黎明破晓to end the long night of their captivity囚禁.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled使受残,使受伤, by the manacles 镣铐束缚of segregation种族隔离 and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity物质繁荣. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in因受苦憔悴 the corners of American society and finds himself 意识到an e*ile放逐,流放 in his own land. And so we've e here today to dramatize 将戏剧化a -shameful condition.

In a sense we have e to our nation's capital to cash a check兑现支票. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent高尚的宏伟的 words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence独立宣言, they were signing a promissory note本票期票 to which every American was to fall heir继承. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable 不可剥夺的rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on 拖欠未出席this promissory note, insofar as在围 her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring 履行this sacred obligation义务债务, America has given the Negro people a bad check空头支票, a check which has e back marked "insufficient funds.

to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from从出来,由复活 the dark and desolate 荒凉的无人烟的valley of segregation种族隔离 to the sunlit照射的 path of racial 种族justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands流沙,危险的陷阱 of racial injustice to the solid rock 坚石of brotherhood手足情谊. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook 忽略the urgency of the moment. This sweltering 闷热的,热的难受的summer of the Negro's legitimate合法的,正当的 discontent不满 will not pass until there is an invigorating 爽快的,精力充分的autumn of freedom and equality平等. Nineteen si*ty-three is not an end but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam 发脾气,放出多余的蒸汽and will now be content will have a rude awakening猛然觉醒 if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility宁静,平静 in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds旋风 of revolt 对抗will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges浮现,摆脱,暴露.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold

which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful合法的 place we must not be guilty of 对有罪反感wrongful不合法的 deeds行为. Let us not seek to 试图,设法satisfy our thirst for渴望热望 freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness苦难 and hatred憎恨. We must ever conduct管理引导 our struggle on挣扎下去 the high plane of dignity and discipline尊严和纪律. We must not allow our creative protest抗议 to degenerate into退化成 physical violence暴力. Again and again we must rise to the majestic 庄严的heights of meeting physical force with soul force精神力量.

The marvelous非凡的惊人的 new militancy战斗状态 which has engulfed 吞没吞食the Negro munity must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have e to realize that their destiny is tied up with 与有密切联系our destiny. And they have e to realize that their freedom is ine*tricably逃不掉的 bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone. -

And as we walk, we must make the pledge誓言,许诺 that we shall always march ahead前进. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees信徒爱好者 of civil rights公利, "When will you be satisfied" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable 无法形容的坏透的horrors 惊骇恐惧of police brutality警察野蛮行为. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue疲劳疲乏 of travel, cannot gain

lodging in寄宿固定在 the motels汽车旅馆 of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down滚下 like waters and righteousness正义正直 like a mighty强大的 stream溪流.

I am not unmindful漫不经心的 that some of you have e here out of great trials and tribulations困难困苦. Some of you have e fresh from刚从``````来 narrow jail cells. Some of you have e from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecutions迫害 and staggered蹒跚 by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans退伍军人 of creative suffering受苦. Continue to work with the faith that unearned 不劳而获的,不相称的suffering is redemptive赎回的挽回的 Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums贫民区 and ghettos 犹太区of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in 沉湎于the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the

difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their dreamcharacter. I have a today!

downI have a dream that one day, in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right down in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and dreambrothers. I have a today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be e*alted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the -

crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith that I will go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. And this will be the day, this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning, "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!" And if America is to be a great nation, this must bee true. And so let freedom ring -- from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring -- from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring -- from the heightening Alleghenies of

  Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring -- from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring -- from the curvaceous slopes of California. -

  But not only that.

Let freedom ring -- from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring -- from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring -- from every hill and molehill of Mississippi,

from every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will allbe able to speed up that day when of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual,

"Free at last, free at last.

God Thank Almighty, we are free at last."
