　　在河北省沧州一带，年年夏历腊月，家家户户都从二十三这天一直忙到三十。三十晚上还要熬夜，叫做“守岁”。这个风俗，跟灶王奶奶有关。

　　玉皇大帝的小女儿贤惠善良，很同情天下的穷人。她偷偷地爱上了一个给人家烧火做饭的穷小伙子。玉皇知道后十分恼怒，就把小女儿打下凡间跟着穷小伙子受罪。王母娘娘同情女儿，从中讲情，玉皇才勉强地给穷小伙封了个“灶王的职位”。穷小伙成了家家户户的“灶王爷”，玉皇的小女儿自然就成了“灶王奶奶”了。

　　灶王奶奶深知百姓的疾苦，就常常以回娘家探亲为名，从天上带些吃的、喝的、穿的、用的东西回来分给穷百姓们。玉皇本来就嫌弃穷女婿和小女儿，又听说小女儿从天上往回带东西，非常生气，就规定只准他们每年腊月二十三日回天宫一趟，其余时间不准回天了。

　　第二年，眼看快过年了，可是穷百姓们还是缺这少那的，有的连锅盖都揭不开了。灶王奶奶看在眼里，疼在心里。腊月二十三到了，她打算回娘家去给穷百姓们要点吃的.东西回来。可是，自己家里连点面星星也没有了，路上没干粮咋办哪?百姓们知道后，就你凑一把我凑一把地弄了些面，烙了两张饼，给灶王奶奶带着上路了。

　　灶王奶奶回到天上，向玉皇大帝讲了人间苦情，可玉皇大帝不但不同情，还嫌女儿带回一身穷气，让她当晚就回去。灶王奶奶气得立即就要走，转念一想，不行，两手空空回去怎么向百姓们交待呀?再说，也不能便宜了狠心的父亲。这时，正好王母娘娘也过来相留，她便顺势说：“俺不走了，明天扎把扫帚带回去扫扫穷气。”

　　二十四这天，灶王奶奶正在扎扫帚，玉皇来催她快回去。她说：“催啥哩，眼看要过年了，家里没有豆腐，明日俺要拐豆腐哩。”

　　Staying Up Late on New Year's Eve

　　守岁的传统源自于一个有趣的民间故事。在中国古代有一个叫作‘年’的凶猛怪物，在除夕夜‘年’会从地洞里出来吃人。因此在除夕夜，每家每户都会一起吃晚饭，晚饭以后没人敢睡觉，所有的家庭成员会坐在一起聊天互相壮胆。逐渐在除夕夜守岁的.习惯形成了，因此在中国，庆祝春节也被叫作过年。然而在城市里很少有人以守岁来欢迎新年。

　　The tradition of staying up late to see New Year in originated from an interesting folk tale. In ancient China there lived a monster named Year, who was very ferocious. Year always went out from its burrow on New Year’s Eve to devour people. Therefore, on every New Year’s Eve, every household would have supper together. After dinner, no one dared go to sleep and all the family members would sit together, chatting and emboldening each other. Gradually the habit of staying up late on New Year’s Eve is formed. Thus in China, “celebrating the Spring Festival” is also called “passing over the year (guo nian)”. However, now there are less and less people in cities who will stay up late to see New Year in.

　　On New Year's Eve, people always stay up late, which is called "Shousui". At night, the families get together, drink and chat. They watch the New Year festival gala and enjoy some snacks (mainly sweets, peanuts and sunflower seeds). It is said that the parents can live for long if the young stay up late. They often sleep after the new day comes or after the New Year festival gala. And all the lights will not turn off for the whole night.

　　除夕夜里，人们通常都会熬夜，这被称为“守岁”。在夜里，家人们围坐一团，一边喝酒、一边聊天，大家一起看春晚、吃零食(通常是糖果、花生和瓜子)。据说子女睡得越晚、父母就活得越长。大家会等到凌晨或是春晚结束后再睡，并且整晚都不会关灯。

　　Chinese New Year Celebration is the most important celebration of the year. Chinese people may celebrate the Chinese New Year in slightly different ways but their wishes are almost the same; they want their family members and friends to be healthy and lucky during next year.

　　春节庆祝活动是一年中最重要的庆祝活动。中国人庆祝春节的方式可能略微不同，但其愿望几乎是相同的，他们希望其家人和朋友来年健康和幸运。

　　Chinese New Year Celebration usually lasts for 15 days. Celebratory activities include Chinese New Feast, firecrackers, giving lucky money to children, the New Year bell ringing and Chinese New Year Greetings. Most of Chinese people will stop the celebrating in their home on the 7th day of New Year because the national holiday usually ends around that day, however celebrations in public areas can last until the 15th day of New Year.

　　春节庆祝活动通常持续15天。庆祝活动包括春节的`年夜饭，放鞭炮，给儿童压岁钱，春节钟声和春节问候。大多数中国人将在春节的第7天停止庆祝活动，因为全国性节假通常在这一天结束，但在公共场所的庆祝活动可能最终持续到正月十五。
